1. What is market structure?
Welcome to Module 3. In Technical Analysis you learned many tools. Now we learn the one thing that sits underneath all of them: market structure.
Market structure is simply the pattern of swing highs and swing lows that price makes. It is the skeleton of the chart. Candles, indicators and patterns are the clothes. If you can read the skeleton, the clothes make much more sense.
Drive past any construction site. Before the walls, paint and windows, there is a concrete frame – pillars and beams. Look at the frame and you already know the shape of the building: how tall, how wide, which way it faces.
Swing highs and lows are the pillars of a chart. Read them first.
1.1 What is a swing?
Price moves in waves. A swing high is a peak where price turned down – a candle whose high is higher than the candles on both sides of it. A swing low is a valley where price turned up.
How many candles on each side? A common rule: a swing high is a candle with at least 2–3 lower highs on each side. Smaller numbers catch tiny swings; bigger numbers catch only major ones. Use what makes the main waves clear on your timeframe.
1.2 Why structure matters so much
- It tells you the trend – objectively, without opinions.
- It tells you where you are wrong. In an uptrend, the last swing low is the line in the sand.
- It tells you where to look for trades. Buying a pullback near a higher low in an uptrend is very different from buying in the middle of a fall.
- It works on every timeframe and every market.
Jab bhi koi naya chart kholo, pehle 30 second sirf swings dekho. Kahan peak bani, kahan valley bani. No indicators, no news. You will be surprised how much clearer everything becomes.
A swing low is a turning point – a low with higher lows on both sides.
If price breaks below the last higher low, the uptrend structure is damaged – a natural place to exit.
- Market structure = the sequence of swing highs and swing lows. The skeleton of the chart.
- A swing high is a peak with lower highs on both sides; a swing low is a valley with higher lows on both sides.
- Structure shows trend, invalidation (stop-loss) and good locations for trades – on any timeframe.
- Ek line mein: Chart ka dhaancha swing highs aur lows hain – pehle dhaancha padho, phir baaki sab.
