5. Multi-timeframe structure

7 min readUpdated 08 Oct 2026

The same stock can be in an uptrend on the weekly chart, a downtrend on the daily chart and a range on the hourly chart – all at the same time. This is not confusing once you understand that smaller structures live inside bigger ones.

Waves on the beach

Stand on Juhu beach. The tide is coming in (the big trend). But individual waves still roll in and pull back (smaller trends). Even when a wave pulls back, the tide keeps rising.

If you build a sandcastle, you watch the tide, not the single wave.

5.1 The two-timeframe method

  1. Higher timeframe (HTF) = direction. Label its structure. Only take trades in its direction.
  2. Lower timeframe (LTF) = timing. Wait for the LTF pullback to end with a sign of strength – like a bullish break of structure on the LTF.
You trade on Direction from
15-minute 1-hour or daily
1-hour Daily
Daily Weekly

5.2 Example walk-through

  • Weekly chart: HH-HL uptrend. Direction = up. Only buys.
  • Daily chart: price has pulled back for six days, making small lower highs and lower lows. This is a pullback inside the weekly uptrend – and it is near the weekly higher low area.
  • Trigger: the daily chart closes above its last small lower high – a bullish change of character on the daily. The pullback may be over.
  • Stop: below the daily pullback low.
  • Target: the weekly high, or higher.

You are buying a small-timeframe reversal in the direction of the big-timeframe trend. That alignment is where good trades come from.

Don’t use three timeframes against each other

If the weekly is up, the daily is down and the hourly is sideways, and you can’t decide – that is not a setup. Alignment is the edge. Confusion is a signal to wait.

From Karan

Ek line yaad rakho: trade the small trend in the direction of the big trend. Bas. Ismein 80% multi-timeframe analysis aa gaya.

Quick check
The weekly chart is in an uptrend. The daily chart shows a 5-day pullback. What is the better plan?

The daily pullback is likely a correction inside the bigger uptrend. Time a buy when the daily shows strength again.

Quick check
What is the job of the higher timeframe?

Higher timeframe = direction. Lower timeframe = timing.

Key takeaways from this chapter
  • Smaller structures live inside bigger ones. Different timeframes can show different trends at the same time.
  • Use the higher timeframe for direction and the lower timeframe for timing.
  • Best setups: a lower-timeframe pullback ending in the direction of the higher-timeframe trend.
  • If timeframes conflict and you are confused, wait.
  • Ek line mein: Chhote trend ko bade trend ki direction mein trade karo – bas, yahi multi-timeframe ka saar hai.
