3. Trending and ranging markets
Markets spend their time in two states: trending or ranging. Many traders say markets range more often than they trend. Knowing which state you are in decides which strategy to use.
3.1 Trending market
- Clear HH + HL (uptrend) or LH + LL (downtrend).
- Pullbacks are shorter than the moves in the trend direction.
- Moving averages slope clearly; price stays on one side of them.
How to trade it: buy pullbacks to higher lows (in uptrends), with a stop below the higher low. Don’t try to pick tops.
3.2 Ranging market
- Highs at roughly the same level, lows at roughly the same level.
- Moves in both directions are similar in size.
- Moving averages are flat; price crosses them again and again.
How to trade it: act near the edges – buy near the bottom, sell or book profit near the top – or wait for a breakout. Avoid the middle: reward and risk are both poor there.
In the canteen, the queue grows and shrinks between 10 and 25 people all afternoon. You learn: join when it is near 10, avoid when it is near 25. That is range trading.
On result day, the queue keeps growing – 30, 45, 60. Waiting for it to go back to 10 makes no sense. That is a trend. Different day, different plan.
3.3 The transition zone – the chop
The most dangerous time is when a trend is ending and a range is forming (or the other way round). Structure is mixed – an LH in an uptrend, but no LL yet. Signals fail often here.
Simple rule for beginners: if you can’t label the structure clearly, you don’t have a trade. Zoom out to a higher timeframe or close the chart.
Draw a horizontal line through the last few highs and another through the last few lows. If both lines are roughly flat – range. If both slope the same way – trend.
Sabse zyada paisa log chop mein gawaate hain – jab market na trend kar raha hai, na clean range. Patience is a position too. No trade is better than a confused trade.
The middle of a range offers poor reward for the risk. Edges or breakouts are better spots.
In a trend, the pullback to a higher low is the classic, lower-risk entry.
- Markets either trend (clear HH-HL or LH-LL) or range (flat highs and lows).
- Trends: buy pullbacks to higher lows (or sell rallies to lower highs).
- Ranges: act near the edges, avoid the middle, or wait for a breakout.
- In mixed, unclear structure – stay out.
- Ek line mein: Trend mein pullback pe kharido, range mein kinaron pe kaam karo, aur beech ke confusion mein bahar raho.
