4. Timeframes – zooming in and out

6 min readUpdated 08 Oct 2026

A candle can represent any period: 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month. This choice is called the timeframe.

See how the story changes? On the 5-minute chart there was a big dip in the middle. On the 1-hour chart, the whole day looks like a smooth climb. Both are true. They just answer different questions.

Google Maps

When you plan a trip from Nashik to Goa, you first zoom out to see the full route. Then, near the destination, you zoom in to find the exact lane.

Charts work the same way. The higher timeframe shows the highway – the main direction. The lower timeframe shows the lanes – the exact entry and exit.

4.1 Which timeframe should you use?

It depends on how long you plan to hold a trade.

Your style Main chart Bigger-picture chart
Intraday 5-min or 15-min 1-hour or daily
Swing (days to weeks) Daily Weekly
Positional / investing Weekly Monthly

A simple rule that works well: look at a timeframe about 4–6 times bigger than your trading chart to decide the direction. Then use your trading chart to time the entry.

4.2 Noise vs signal

Smaller timeframes have more noise – random up and down movements that don’t mean much. Bigger timeframes have more signal – moves that reflect real buying and selling by large players.

That is why beginners usually do better on daily charts. You get time to think, and one candle per day means fewer emotional decisions.

Timeframe hopping

A common mistake: you buy on a daily chart, the price dips, and then you open the 5-minute chart and panic. Decide your timeframe before you trade, and manage the trade on that timeframe.

From Karan

Mera suggestion for beginners: start with the daily chart. Check the weekly for direction. Ignore 1-minute and 5-minute charts for at least the first few months. Fewer candles, better decisions.

Quick check
You plan to hold a trade for 1–3 weeks. Which chart should be your main chart?

Swing trades are usually planned on the daily chart, with the weekly for direction.

Quick check
The daily chart is in a strong uptrend, but the 15-minute chart is falling today. What is the most sensible view?

Lower timeframes often show pullbacks inside a bigger trend. The higher timeframe gives direction.

Key takeaways from this chapter
  • The timeframe is how much time each candle represents.
  • Higher timeframes show direction and signal; lower timeframes show detail and noise.
  • Choose the timeframe based on how long you hold. Use a bigger one for direction.
  • Beginners: start with daily charts. Don’t hop timeframes in the middle of a trade.
  • Ek line mein: Bada timeframe raasta dikhata hai, chhota timeframe gali – pehle raasta dekho, phir gali.
