10. Traders vs investors – and the truth about risk
You now know how the market works. Before we start reading charts, let us talk honestly about the different ways people take part – and about losses. This chapter may be the most important one in this module.
10.1 Four common styles
| Style | Holding period | What they look at |
|---|---|---|
| Long-term investor | Years | Business quality, profits, valuation |
| Positional / swing trader | Days to weeks | Daily and weekly charts, trends |
| Intraday trader | Minutes to hours | Short-timeframe charts, speed, discipline |
| F&O trader | Days or less | Futures and options – leveraged bets on price |
There is no "best" style. But each one needs different skills, time and temperament. Most beginners jump into the fastest, riskiest style first. That is backwards.
10.2 The hard truth about F&O
SEBI has studied individual traders in futures and options (F&O) several times. Its study of the financial year 2024-25 found that about 91% of individual F&O traders lost money. Earlier studies showed similar results.
Why? Leverage, costs, poor risk control, and trading on tips or emotions. F&O is not evil – it is a professional tool. But a beginner using it is like a learner driver taking a racing car on the expressway.
Vikram and Aditya, cousins from Aurangabad, both started in the market with ₹1 lakh.
Vikram saw an Instagram reel showing huge option profits. He started buying options the next week. He made ₹18,000 in the first three days and felt like a genius. In two months, his ₹1 lakh was down to ₹22,000.
Aditya spent three months learning. He paper-traded on charts, kept a notebook, and then started with small delivery trades, risking only 1% per trade. After a year, his account was up a modest amount. But more important – he was still in the game, and getting better every month.
The market does not reward who starts fast. It rewards who survives long.
10.3 The mindset for this school
- Learn before you earn. Treat the first months like college fees – you are paying with time, not money.
- Risk small. We will learn position sizing later. The idea: no single trade should hurt you badly.
- Think in probabilities. No chart pattern works every time. You are looking for good odds, not certainty.
- Keep records. Note why you entered, where you would exit, and what happened.
- Ignore tips. If someone knew a sure thing, they would not be sending it to you for free on WhatsApp.
Bahut log sochte hain ki charts se har move pakad lenge. It doesn’t work like that. Charts don’t predict the future. They help you find spots where the odds are on your side and where you know exactly when you are wrong. Once this clicks, trading becomes calm and boring – and that is a good thing.
SEBI found about 91% of individual F&O traders lost money in FY25. Learn and practise before touching leveraged products.
Survival and learning come first. Profits come from skill, and skill takes time.
- People participate as investors, swing traders, intraday traders or F&O traders. Each needs different skills.
- SEBI’s studies show most individual F&O traders lose money. Leverage is a professional tool, not a shortcut.
- Learn first, risk small, think in probabilities, keep records and ignore tips.
- Next module: Technical Analysis – learning to read the chart itself.
- Ek line mein: Market mein jaldi amir banne ki koshish sabse mehngi padti hai – pehle seekho, chhota risk lo, lamba tiko.
